Pilgrims Retrace "Way of the Cross"

Pilgrims have been retracing the path that Jesus is believed to have walked ahead of his crucifixion, as hundreds of people took part in Good Friday commemorations in Jerusalem.

Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified, buried and then resurrected.
This is known as the Way of the Cross but also Stations of the Cross, with 12 stopping points along the way.

At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre pilgrims waited for the unlocking of the doors ahead of Easter rituals.

The commemoration was also celebrated in other parts of the world, including the City of New Ulm, Minnesota.

While Catholics and Orthodox Christians follow different calendars, this year they coincide and the churches celebrated Good Friday together.  Photo by Steve Muscatello of New Ulm's The Journal.

The Jewish holiday of Passover is also being marked in Jerusalem’s Old City.
