Deputy governor Wilfried Haslauer of the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) said the project had "immense value" for the city, which is most famous for being the birthplace of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

A 200-member crew will stay in Salzburg for three weeks in December to shoot scenes for the movie which has the working title "The Unknown Wichita Project".

"The fact alone they will stay in four- and five-star hotels means a created value of 1.2 million Euros. And the tourist image boost will certainly be higher than the one being given to Bregenz by the shooting of the James Bond movie (Quantum of Solace), in 2008," Haslauer said.

Shooting for the 20th Century Fox production will also take place in Hawaii, Seville and Boston, it has been announced.
The last major Hollywood production shot in Austria was "Season of the Witch" starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Pearlman.

The supernatural thriller will be in cinemas next year. Some scenes of the film were shot in Styria’s Ausseerland region and at Kreuzenstein Castle in Lower Austria in November 2008.
