Archbishop Reinhard Marx of Munich said the Church must again actively spread the Christian faith and bring back those who left in the wake of widespread sexual abuses by Church institutions.
"A new evangelization is our mission of the coming age," the archbishop said in his traditional New Year's night sermon Friday in Munich's famous Liebfrauendom. "The Church does not want a society that avoids mentioning the word of God altogether."
He said he senses a deep sense of insecurity among many people, not just Church goers but society in general, adding he was disturbed by the growing number of people deciding to leave the Church.
Marx decribed 2010 as a very difficult year for the Church in Germany and stressed the need for dealing with sexual abuse at Church institutions in the future as well.
"We have to face the truth, but must alse reject generalizations, and that means the Catholic Church must do its homework," he said. Though the Church had to face up to its responsibility, Marx said German society as a whole needed to be aware of the suffering of children.
