“German-American Friendship Month” features a series of cultural events held in the area to publicize the annual German-American Steuben Parade, and pay tribute the many contributions made by German-Americans to this country and to the rest of the world!,
“It is important to acknowledge the many contributions of the largest ethnic group in America, the German-Americans,” says Halter, himself an immigrant from Germany. “To have the mayor acknowledge these contributions is very important to the overall community!”
Names like Roebling (Brooklyn Bridge), Steinway (concert pianos), Ruth and Gehrig (sports), Earhart and Lindbergh (aviation), Eisenhower and Kissinger (world politics and peace) are all part of the makeup of what is present-day New York and present-day America.
This year’s German-American Steuben Parade will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, starting at 11:30 am. For the first time in just over twenty years, the Parade will be broadcast live on PBS WNET Thirteen and on WLIW 21, starting at 12 noon.
The Parade will feature over 200 groups from the U.S. and 25 more groups from Germany and Austria. There will be 27 floats marking the many accomplishments of Americans of German ancestry, and four Grand Marshals.
They are Samantha Brown, the popular host of Travel Channel´s "Passport to Europe," Ilse Aigner, German Secretary of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection, Erik Bettermann, Director of Deutsche Welle, and the newly installed German Ambassador to the United States, Peter Ammon.
