Austria Honors Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter

As her last act as Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik has bestowed the "Great Award for Service to the Republic of Austria" on German-born Austrian violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Acting on behalf of President Heinz Fischer Plassnik presented Mutter, who became an Austrian citizen 10 years ago, with the award Wednesday.

Plassnik cited Mutter’s contribution as a foreign ministry ambassador to the initiative "World without Mines" and her promotion of musical education as instances of such service. Mutter has performed two benefit concerts for the initiative.

Mutter said at the ceremony that the award was "an incentive to accomplish even more in the rest of my life" and that music was "a language that unites us all, relaxes us and enables us to change many things."

Plassnik said that the ceremony was her last official act as foreign minister. She will leave office after the next Austrian government is sworn in on December 2 but will take up her mandate as a member of the federal parliament.
