Such a settlement would become a German colony or state in the U.S.A.The response to their book was overwhelming, causing a second edition to be published and thousands of copies printed.
Altogether, five hundred signed up and in 1834 made the journey to the U.S. Although plans for a German state failed, many of the members of the Giessen Emigration Society landed in Missouri and settled there.
These settlers and the publicity surrounding the Giessen Emigration Society no doubt contributed to the emigration of others to Missouri.
The interest of Muench and Follenius in Missouri emanated from the glowing report about the area published in 1829 by Gottfried Duden's Bericht über eine Reise nach den westlichen Staaten Nordamerika's, now also available in translation as: Report on a Journey to the Western States of North America.

For those interested in the area, the Missouri German Consortium has just announced Utopia Revisited which consists of a tour of German heritage sites relating to Duden, Muench, Follenius and the German emigrants that came to Missouri.
According to the Missouri German Heritage Consortium “On Saturday, September 24th, 2011 at 1p.m. the buses will depart Washington, Missouri and tour participants will have a rare opportunity to become a member of the Giessen Emigration Society, and experience their departure from Germany, voyage to the U.S., travel the frontier and settle in the Lake Creek valley.
“Tickets are $25 per person and available by PayPal or by mail. The tour is being sponsored by the Missouri German Heritage Consortium and members of the Sommer-Republik from Bremen, Germany.
