A man who listens to the name David McAllister, right, has been elected Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. The half-Scot succeeds Christian Wulff, Germany's new President.

Wulff, 51, stepped down as Ministerpräsident, or prime minister of Lower Saxony in Mai, after Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Christian Democratic Party (CDU) named him their candidate for the country’s highest office.
Wulff was elected on Wednesday, but it took three rounds of voting, laying bare discontent within Merkel's own ranks.
For the past seven years, McAllister had been his party’s majority leader in the Landtag. Two years ago, he relieved Wulff as CDU chairman of Lower Saxony. He is the youngest of Germany’s 16 state prime ministers.
McAllister’s father, a Scotsman, served in the British military in Germany where he met his wife, David’s mother.
David McAllister has two small children. The family lives in Bad Dederkesa, a spa near the port city of Cuxhafen.
